El Quimbo Hydroelectric Plant contemplates the formation of a reservoir over the Magdalena River through a dam in the canyon sector named El Quimbo, located some 1,300 m upstream from the Páez River delta.

The works for hydroelectric exploitation consist of a dam, an auxiliary closure dam, a diversion system, a spillway, a driving system and a powerhouse.

The reservoir will have a length of 55 km at the normal maximum operating level (elevation 720 meters above sea level), a maximum width of 4 km and an average width of 1.4 km. The flood area would be 8,250 ha, the total reservoir volume is 3,205 hm3 and the operating storage volume is 2,354 hm3.
