This is not a far-fetched idea because Emgesa, through the El Guavio Power Plant, and within its Environmental Education Program, supports the diversity of 57 specimens of 11 different genera at the Orchid Clinic.
There, species such as Epidendrum, Cattleya (our national flower), Sobralia, Dichaea, Mormolyca, Specklinia, Polystachya, Encyclia, Máxillaria, Camaridium Scaphyglottis and Rodriguezia are protected thanks to different actions that comply with the Convention on Biological Diversity.
A treaty of which Colombia is a part, and in which companies and the community participate in activities that guarantee the conservation of our Biological Heritage through the rescue, care, propagation and reintroduction of orchid species and other epiphytes.
In addition, the clinic complies with goals 15-16 of the Sustainable Development Goals established by the UNO, for the community becomes involved in favor of a healthy society and environment.
What actions does the clinic carry out?
- Recovery and conservation of specimens that are again relocated in the forests, maintaining the diversity in natural areas.
- Teaching of conservation and appropriation techniques of this National Heritage.
- Development of a conservation program for the appropriation of plant wealth in the region through work involving the local community.
In this program, Mothers of the villages of San Roque, Boca de Monte, Campo Alegre, La Floresta, Mámbita Centro and Campamento, learn through training and work days in the clinic, the care and importance of preserving orchids.
They also learn about the biological value of these plants and their ecological importance within ecosystems, since they are a source of reproduction for many amphibian species, who lay their eggs in these types of plants.
Initiatives such as the Orchid Clinic demonstrate Emgesa El Guavio Power Plant’s commitment as an environmentally and socially sustainable company. We are excited to support this initiative, as the conservation of one of the most valuable symbols of our country relies on it.
