Energy transition in Colombia and Central America

The global discussion on the direction of energy policy is dominated by the energy transition and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This has led to increasing pressure for countries to restrict the production and consumption of fossil fuels and to accelerate the transition toward low-emission energy production and consumption in order to contribute to the fight against global warming.

Description of the Roadmap Study for the Energy Transition:

We all know that one of the crises considered among the greatest challenges of the 21st century, one that still remains unresolved, is climate change. We are living in a time of major challenges that can be transformed into opportunities to accelerate the transition toward a more just society that respects the planet. To achieve this, we must focus our efforts on identifying innovative, timely, and effective solutions for both the planet and humanity. Without a doubt, the impacts of climate change require us to prioritize short- and long-term actions to adapt and prevent more severe consequences. Motivated by the desire to contribute to this collective effort, the Enel Group is making available the studies titled “Roadmap for the Energy Transition of Colombia and Central America 2030-2050”, prepared by independent consultants for the four countries in which we operate. These studies were developed with the inclusive participation of various public and private institutions, industry associations, academia, and national experts. This initiative represents a technical and inclusive proposal promoted by Enel, aimed at accelerating the necessary transition toward the sustainable decarbonization of the energy model in the countries where we operate. It does so by sharing and strengthening baseline conditions, incorporating diverse perspectives on key issues, and identifying potential pathways toward carbon-neutral nations.

ETR LATAM Project:

This same initiative is being carried out in four other Latin American countries where the Enel Group operates. Globally, Enel has been leading the energy transition and has announced that it will achieve Zero Carbon by 2040. "Now we must join forces to follow a coherent path to limit global warming. The electrification of consumption, combined with renewable energy, will be key to achieving zero emissions and limiting global warming. The energy transition is beneficial not only for the climate, but also for the economy and society. The electrification of consumption and the digitalization of energy grids will support this transformation, and new clean generation technologies will provide jobs and development for our region”.

Independent Consultant that Developed the Roadmap for Colombia:

ABOUT CREE: The Centro Regional de Estudios de Energía (Regional Center for Energy Studies - CREE) was created to research, analyze, and discuss energy policy issues in Colombia. While it works across different areas, the Energy Transition (ET) is at the core of its work. Not only is it central to the energy debate as the main vehicle to address climate change threats, but it is also closely linked to the most relevant energy policy discussions. Expansion mechanisms, the use of new technologies, energy market operations, supply security, consumption efficiency, and integration are among the topics CREE seeks to address through quantitative tools and analysis from a public policy and regulatory perspective.
