  • CODENSA and EMGESA are committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

CODENSA and EMGESA, Enel Group companies in Colombia, took part today in the launch of the new GRI Standards, updated by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), based on which sustainability reporting is carried out worldwide.

The purpose of updating these standards is to adapt to the progress made in the Paris Agreement and in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, among which the Enel Group has committed to specifically supporting four: Quality Education; Affordable and Clean Energy; Decent Work and Economic Growth; and Climate Action.

The Enel Group has been working hand-in-hand with the GRI for ten years to promote the integration of sustainability in the corporate strategies and to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as one of the first companies in the world to integrate these goals in its Strategic Plan.

As a result of Enel's constant management in reporting on its activities, since 2007, the Group has been a member of the Gold Community of the Global Reporting Initiative, a prestigious independent international organization pioneering in corporate sustainability reports for 20 years, bringing together 568 companies and entities around the world.

SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT IN COLOMBIA

CODENSA and EMGESA have contributed to the fulfillment of four of the Sustainable Development Goals through different initiatives that have a direct and specific impact on the communities of its areas of influence, thus promoting the improvement of their quality of life.

Quality Education

In terms of education, it is important to highlight programs such as Educando con energía, Conéctate con la educación, Buena energía para tu escuela, Formación para el trabajo and Semilleros de tecnología, among others, which have benefited nearly 19,000 people.

Affordable and Clean Energy

Regarding the goal of Affordable and Clean Energy, work is being done to bring the utility of electricity to more Colombians, along with information on its efficient use. The Companies are moving forward in the implementation of the Cundinamarca at 100% program, through which 8,500 customers in the department who had never had the utility will be provided with electricity.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

Among the advances in the Decent Work and Economic Growth goal, initiatives have been taken for the engagement of unskilled workers at different power plants, strengthening citizen overseeing and developing productive programs. Nearly 4,500 people have benefited from these initiatives.

Climate Action

Finally, in relation to Climate Action, the Companies are working on projects for the generation of energy through renewable sources, such as solar and wind power.

MANAGING AND COMMUNICATING

Management or sustainability reports are the mechanism through which companies disclose their social, environmental, labor and corporate governance impacts. The main change of the new standards with regard to the G4 Guide is its modular, interrelated structure, which provides the GRI with more flexibility when it comes to updating each of the aspects, and even adding extras. The new standard, disclosed today, will begin to apply in the information of 2017, i.e., it will be reflected in the reports prepared in 2018 regarding the previous fiscal year.

For 13 years, CODENSA and EMGESA have been preparing sustainability reports, informing their stakeholders of their management and performance in different areas, including digitalization, sustainable innovation, environmental protection and relations with the communities where they operate.

Since last year, as part of their sustainability strategy, CODENSA and EMGESA formalized their Creating Shared Value model through the CSV Policy, as a way to integrate sustainability and strive for competitiveness in the businesses and in the communities where they operate, based on principles of ethics, transparency, inclusion and safety, as well as respect for the environment and human rights.

“CODENSA and EMGESA will implement the new GRI management reporting standards to ensure comprehensiveness in information management. We will remain committed to the use and reporting of reliable and robust data in order to provide our internal and external stakeholders with better access to information for decision-making purposes,” said Lucio Rubio Díaz, General Director of Enel in Colombia.
